Slovenia vignette: Everything you need to know to drive legally
The Slovenian motorway vignette (called 'e-vinjeta') is mandatory for driving on motorways and expressways in Slovenia.
Fully digital since 2022, it replaces the old sticker to be placed on the windshield. Now, everything is done online: you just need to register your license plate and choose the desired validity period.
With EuroVignette, you can purchase your Slovenian vignette in just a few clicks, securely.
Highways and affected roads in Slovenia
In Slovenia, all highways (A1, A2, A3…) and expressways (H3, H4…) are subject to the electronic vignette. This includes major routes connecting Ljubljana to Maribor, Koper, Nova Gorica, or the Austrian border.
The network is dense and modern, and even short urban trips may include toll sections. Therefore, it is essential to obtain a vignette before using these roads.
Driving without a vignette: zones and exceptions
In Slovenia, the vignette is mandatory for all vehicles under 3.5 tons using the highways (avtoceste, prefix A) or expressways (hitra cesta, prefix H). This system applies to almost the entire fast road network in the country, without physical barriers, which implies strict electronic control through license plate reading.
However, it is possible to drive without a vignette on certain secondary, national, or local roads, notably:
- Around Ljubljana, via non-classified 'highway' peripheral routes (e.g., road 104 or 107)
- In rural or mountainous areas, far from major routes
- For certain direct border accesses, provided you stay on local roads.
Attention: there is no tolerance as soon as you enter a section classified as 'A' or 'H'. Even a few meters on a highway without a vignette will result in a fine.
To avoid any mistakes, it is advisable to plan your route well in advance: disable highways on your GPS if you do not intend to use them, or purchase a vignette, even for a short trip, to drive peacefully.
What types of vehicles need a vignette in Slovenia?
In Slovenia, the vignette is mandatory for all vehicles under 3.5 tons, whether they are cars, vans, or motorhomes.
Motorcycles are also affected, with a specific vignette.
Vehicles over 3.5 tons (trucks, buses) are not subject to the vignette: they are subject to an electronic toll system based on the kilometers traveled. This toll system is called DarsGo.
MANDATORY VIGNETTE
Cars, vans, camper vans, motorcycles
VIGNETTE NOT REQUIRED
Trucks, coaches, buses.
Validity periods of the Slovenian vignette
Slovenia offers several validity periods for its electronic vignettes, depending on the type of vehicle.
1: Two-wheeled vehicles (width less than 50cm)
2A: Cars and motorhomes
2B: Vans
Vehicle < 3.5 t
Trailer > 3.5t
For cars, you can choose a vignette for 7 days, 1 month, or 1 year.
The 7-day vignette is ideal for short stays or transits. It is valid for 7 consecutive days from the selected activation date. It is the most commonly used option by tourists and passing travelers.
The monthly vignette is valid for 30 calendar days from the activation date. It offers great flexibility for extended stays, business trips, or multiple returns.
The annual vignette is valid for 12 rolling months, starting from the date chosen at the time of purchase. For example, a vignette activated on August 1, 2026, will be valid until August 1, 2027. It is the most economical option for regular drivers or residents.
The Slovenian vignette can be purchased up to 30 days before the start date. It is directly linked to your license plate and registered in the national system. Carefully check your information before confirming the order: in Slovenia, no changes or refunds are possible after purchase.
Where to buy your vignette for Slovenia?
The easiest way to purchase your Slovenian vignette is through EuroVignette. You benefit from a service in your language, secure payment, and the assurance that your license plate is properly registered in the official system.
It is also possible to buy the vignette on-site at certain gas stations near the borders or at electronic kiosks located near the entrances to the motorway network, but this sometimes involves waiting in line and a system only in Slovene.
Penalties for not having a vignette in Slovenia
If you drive without a valid vignette, you face an immediate fine of €300 to €800.
Checks are frequent thanks to an automated camera system, especially at highway entrances. Authorities can also conduct on-site checks.
To avoid any unpleasant surprises, buy your vignette before hitting the road.
To avoid any inconvenience, purchase your vignette before using a highway.
Highways in Slovenia
The Slovenian highway network, although compact, is particularly strategic. It efficiently connects the capital Ljubljana to the main cities of the country (Maribor, Koper, Celje, Nova Gorica…) as well as to the Italian, Austrian, Croatian, and Hungarian borders. Slovenian highways are identified by the letter "A", and expressways by the letter "H."
All of these infrastructures require a vignette, including tunnels and urban bypasses. The fluidity of the network makes it a major transit route in Central Europe, particularly busy during the summer season.
THE MOTORWAY NETWORK IN SLOVENIA
625 km
The Slovenian network efficiently connects the main nerve points of the country: Ljubljana, Maribor, Koper, Nova Gorica, and the borders to Austria, Italy, Croatia, and Hungary.
The specifics of the highway network in Slovenia
The Slovenian highway network includes several major road tunnels, integrated into the main highways and designed to ensure smooth traffic flow through the mountainous areas of the country. These modern and well-secured infrastructures are included in the vignette fee: no specific toll is charged for light vehicles (under 3.5 tons), except for indicated exceptions.
Slovenia has several strategic motorway routes that are particularly busy throughout the year, especially by holidaymakers and transporters. The A1 crosses the country from the northeast (Maribor) to the southwest (Koper via Ljubljana), connecting major cities and the Adriatic coast. The A2, on the other hand, connects Austria to Croatia via the Karavanke tunnel, Ljubljana, and the Obrežje border crossing, constituting a key corridor for European transit. The A3 (towards Italy) and H4 (towards Nova Gorica) motorways complete this dense and connected network. All these routes are subject to the vignette, with particularly intense traffic in summer and during holiday departures.
Can an electronic vignette be transferred in Slovenia?
No, the electronic vignette is neither transferable nor modifiable once purchased! It is automatically linked to the license plate entered at the time of ordering and remains valid only for that specific vehicle for its entire validity period.
This means you cannot:
- Transfer a vignette to another vehicle (even in case of sale, exchange, or temporary replacement)
- Correct a typo on the license plate after payment validation
- Change the validity period after purchase
What to do in case of an error?
If you entered an incorrect license plate or selected the wrong type of vignette, the vignette becomes invalid and you risk a fine in case of a check, even if payment has been made.
No modification or refund procedure is provided by the authorities, which is why it is essential to check all information before confirming your order.
Before any purchase, take the time to verify the accuracy of your license plate (spelling, format, any spaces), confirm the type of vehicle, the desired duration, and the start date of validity. Keep your proof of purchase by email in case of inspection or dispute. If in doubt, do not hesitate to contact our customer service available 24/7 before placing your order.
