Hungarian sticker: Everything you need to know to drive legally
The Hungarian highway vignette (called "e-Matrica") is mandatory for using highways and expressways in Hungary. Fully digitized for several years, it replaces the old stickers and allows for legal travel on the toll network without physical formalities. The vignette purchase is made online: simply register your license plate, choose the desired duration, and you are ready to hit the road.
With EuroVignette, the entire process is quick, simple, and compliant with the requirements of the Hungarian authorities.
Highways and roads concerned in Hungary
The Hungarian vignette is required to travel on all highways and expressways in the country, marked by the letter "M".
This includes major routes like the M1 towards Austria, the M3 towards the East, or the M7 towards Croatia.
Unlike some countries where only certain sections are toll roads, Hungary has a nationwide vignette system for its entire motorway network. Even for a short trip or a simple urban exit using a motorway, the vignette is mandatory. Not having one may result in an immediate fine.
Driving without a vignette: zones and exceptions
Although the majority of the Hungarian network is subject to the vignette, certain specific sections are exempt, particularly around Budapest and on some regional bypasses. These free sections have been established to facilitate local travel without requiring the purchase of a vignette, especially to access suburban areas, airports, or bypass certain urban areas.
Here are the main routes exempt from stickers in 2025:
- M0 ring road (Budapest): free between road no. 1 and M5, as well as between M4 and M3. The Megyeri Bridge (Megyeri-híd) is also exempt.
- M4: free section between Vecsés and Budapest International Airport.
- M31 and M8: completely free highways.
- M9: free section between routes 6 and 61 (bypass of Kaposvár).
- M60: free section at the southwest entrance of Pécs (between routes 58 and 5826).
These exemptions are subject to change each year. It is therefore highly recommended to consult the updated official map or to use a platform like EuroVignette that takes into account the latest rules.
In case of doubt, it is better to purchase a vignette, even for a short trip, as automated checks are frequent and fines can reach up to 64,850 HUF (approximately €170).
What types of vehicles need a vignette in Hungary?
In Hungary, the vignette is mandatory for all motor vehicles under 3.5 tons traveling on highways and expressways: cars, motorhomes, vans, utility vans… Unlike Bulgaria, motorcycles must also have a vignette.
The Hungarian system distinguishes several categories of vehicles (D1, D2, B2…) based on size, weight, and number of passengers. So make sure to select the correct category at the time of your order.
Vehicles over 3.5 tons are subject to a specific toll system (HU-GO), different from the standard electronic vignette.
MANDATORY VIGNETTE

Validity of stickers in Hungary: durations and activation dates
Hungary offers several validity durations for its electronic vignettes, suitable for different types of stays: short stopovers, extended vacations, or regular travel.
The validity period starts from the date chosen at the time of purchase, with the possibility of planning in advance. Therefore, it is important to select the start date carefully when ordering to avoid any infringement.

The 10-day Hungarian vignette is ideal for short stays or transits to another country. It is valid for 10 consecutive days from the activation date. For example, a vignette activated on August 5 will be valid until August 14 inclusive. This is the most popular option among tourists and fast-moving drivers.
The monthly vignette is valid for 30 calendar days from the chosen activation date. It offers a flexible solution for extended stays, whether for business, tourism, or family purposes. It is also useful for cross-border workers or posted workers on assignment.
The annual Hungarian vignette is valid from January 1 to December 31 of the current year, regardless of the purchase date. It is perfect for residents, businesses, or regular drivers. Note: it is not valid for 12 rolling months, but rather for the calendar year. There is also a regional vignette (county sticker) valid in only one county, at a reduced price.
You can purchase your Hungarian vignette up to 30 days in advance. Once activated, it is immediately registered in the national system via your license plate. Make sure to check all the information entered, as no changes or refunds are possible after payment.
Where to buy your vignette for Hungary?
The simplest and fastest way to obtain your e-vignette is to go through EuroVignette. You benefit from a secure purchase, support in your language, and the guarantee that your plate is properly registered in the official system.
For those who prefer an on-site solution, gas stations located near the borders, some automatic kiosks, and Hungarian post offices also offer the vignette. However, these physical options often have interfaces in Hungarian or English, and input errors (license plate, type of vignette) cannot be modified or refunded.
Penalties for lack of sticker in Hungary
Driving without a valid sticker in Hungary exposes you to immediate penalties. The country uses an automated control system via ANPR cameras, which scan license plates in real-time.
In case of vignette default:
- The standard fine is 16,220 HUF (approximately €42) if paid quickly
- It can climb to 64,850 HUF (approximately €170) if the deadline is exceeded
- The police can also intercept you on-site and ask you to pay immediately.
To avoid any inconvenience, purchase your vignette before using a highway.
Highways in Hungary
The Hungarian highway network is dense, modern, and constantly expanding. It efficiently connects Budapest to the major cities of the country as well as to the Austrian, Slovak, Romanian, Serbian, Croatian, and Slovenian borders. Hungarian highways are identified by the letter "M" (M1, M3, M5, etc.) and currently cover over 1,700 kilometers, including major international transit routes.
Among the most frequented are the M1 (Budapest–Vienna), M3 (towards the East of the country), M5 (towards Serbia), and M7 (towards Lake Balaton and Croatia). The entire motorway network is subject to the electronic vignette (e-Matrica) requirement, except for certain well-defined free sections.
Thanks to this strategic network, Hungary serves as a key transit point in Central Europe, both for tourism and for international freight transport.
THE HIGHWAY NETWORK IN HUNGARY
1855 km
The highway and expressway network in Hungary is one of the most developed in Central Europe. This dense and continuously developing network, notably with the addition of 279 km of new highway sections and 299 km of planned expansions by 2034, makes Hungary a strategic road hub in Europe.
The specifics of the highway network in Hungary
The Hungarian highway network has several important features to know before hitting the road.
First of all, all highways and expressways are subject to the electronic vignette (e-Matrica) for vehicles under 3.5 tons. Unlike other countries where tolls are calculated upon passage, Hungary operates on a prepaid fixed-duration system linked to the license plate.
The network is organized around Budapest, with highways radiating towards the main borders and neighboring capitals. Highways are designated by the letter "M" followed by a number (e.g.: M1, M3, M5…), and most have 2 to 3 lanes in each direction, with speed limits of up to 130 km/h.
Another specificity: the presence of free sections on certain segments of the M0 ring road and around major urban areas, particularly to allow access to the airport or certain bypasses.
Can an electronic vignette be transferred in Hungary?
No, the electronic vignette is neither transferable nor modifiable once purchased! It is automatically linked to the license plate entered at the time of order and remains valid only for that specific vehicle for its entire validity period.
This means you cannot:
- Transfer a vignette to another vehicle (even in case of sale, exchange, or temporary replacement)
- Correct a typo on the license plate after payment validation
- Change the validity period after purchase
What to do in case of an error?
If you entered an incorrect license plate or selected the wrong type of vignette, the vignette becomes invalid and you risk a fine during a check, even if payment has been made.
No modification or refund procedure is provided by the authorities, which is why it is essential to check all information before confirming your order.
When placing your order on EuroVignette, you can quickly contact our customer service in case of an error at the following address: support@euro-vignette.com
Before any purchase, take the time to check the accuracy of your license plate (spelling, format, any spaces), confirm the type of vehicle, the desired duration, and the start date of validity. Keep your proof of purchase by email in case of inspection or dispute. If in doubt, do not hesitate to contact our customer service available 24/7 before placing the order.
