Slovakia vignette: Everything you need to know to drive legally
In Slovakia, using the highway network and certain expressways is conditional on possessing an electronic vignette (e-známka). This requirement applies to the vast majority of light vehicles registered in Slovakia or abroad. The vignette is entirely digital: it is linked to your license plate and automatically checked by gantries and cameras installed on the relevant routes. There is no physical toll, but frequent checks, and penalties for forgetting are immediate.
Highways and affected roads in Slovakia
In Slovakia, possessing a vignette is mandatory to use most highways (D) and expressways (R). These routes are clearly marked by green signs bearing the letters D or R, followed by a number (e.g., D1, R1). The network covers the main connections between major cities (Bratislava, Košice, Žilina, Nitra...) and the borders with Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Ukraine.
The vignette is required as soon as you enter one of these roads, even for a few kilometers. However, certain sections of highways around major cities like Bratislava or Prešov are exempted to facilitate local traffic without a vignette.
All checks are automated: there are no toll barriers, but cameras scan your plate to verify that your vignette is active and suitable for your type of vehicle. To travel with peace of mind, consider purchasing it before entering the toll network.
Driving without a vignette: zones and exceptions
While most of the Slovak motorway and expressway network is subject to vignettes, some sections are exempt from payment to facilitate access to cities or local areas. These toll-free sections are mainly located around Bratislava, Prešov, Košice, and Žilina. The free sections are primarily urban or suburban, often used to bypass a city without entering the main toll network.
These exempt sections do not require any special procedures: there is no need to report your journey or activate anything. You just need to avoid exceeding the relevant exits. Road signs clearly inform you when you leave a free zone to enter a vignette-required section. Be attentive to the signage "Začiatok spoplatneného úseku" (beginning of toll section).
These segments are generally used for local travel, particularly to access a city center, an industrial area, or an exit to a national road.
However, regulations may change regularly, and free sections may be reduced or reintegrated into the toll system.
It is prohibited to combine several free segments to avoid purchasing a vignette while covering a significant distance. The police or cameras may consider this as fraudulent circumvention.
In case of doubt, it's better to buy a short-term vignette (10 days), especially if you plan to drive around major cities.
Examples of free sections (non-exhaustive list): D1 Bratislava – Triblavina D2 Lamač – Bratislava, border with Austria R1 Nitra – Banská Bystrica (some urban portions) D4 and R7: partially free around Bratislava D3 around Žilina: free transition sections
What types of vehicles must have a vignette in Slovakia?
The electronic vignette is mandatory in Slovakia for all motor vehicles whose total authorized weight does not exceed 3.5 tons. This rule applies to both locally registered vehicles and those coming from abroad. Thus, passenger cars, motorhomes, SUVs, converted vans, and light commercial vehicles must all have a valid vignette before accessing the highway network or the relevant expressways.
On the other hand, motorcycles are completely exempt from this requirement, regardless of the route taken. At the other end, vehicles over 3.5 tons such as trucks, coaches, or buses cannot use the standard vignette: they are subject to a per-kilometer toll system via an onboard device (eToll), managed separately.
The Slovak system is fully dematerialized: there are no stickers to affix, as the vignette is linked to the vehicle's license plate. When purchasing, you simply select the type of vehicle and the desired duration (10 days, 30 days, or 1 year). Once payment is made, validation is immediate, and checks are carried out automatically via fixed and mobile cameras.
MANDATORY VIGNETTE
Cars, camper vans, vans, light commercial vehicles
VIGNETTE NOT REQUIRED
Motorcycles, trucks, buses.
Validity periods of vignettes in Slovakia
The Slovak electronic vignette offers several validity periods to suit the needs of all drivers, whether for a short stay or regular travel. You can choose from three main options:
Vehicle < 3.5 t
Trailer
The 10-day vignette is perfect for passing travelers or tourist trips. It is valid for 10 consecutive days from the date chosen at the time of purchase, allowing you to plan your activation in advance.
The 30-day vignette, on the other hand, covers an entire month, regardless of the number of trips made during this period.
Finally, the annual vignette is valid for 365 rolling days from the activation day, not by calendar year. This means that a vignette purchased on July 15 will be valid until July 14 of the following year.
All these vignettes are available in 100% digital format, with no sticker to affix, and can be purchased online in just a few clicks. You receive immediate confirmation by email, with a summary of the chosen duration and the associated license plate.
Where to buy your vignette for Slovakia?
Purchasing the Slovak highway vignette (e-známka) is simple, quick, and fully digital. The most convenient method is online ordering, especially through reliable platforms like EuroVignette, which allow you to pay in just a few clicks and receive immediate confirmation by email. This purchasing method ensures quick activation and 100% secure payment.
It is also possible to buy the vignette on-site, at many gas stations, at border posts, or via automatic payment kiosks installed near the highways. The machines are available in several languages and accept card payments.
The vignette is linked to your license plate, so you don’t have to display anything on the windshield. Just make sure to check the accuracy of the information entered during purchase to avoid any issues in case of a check.
Penalties for not having a vignette in Slovakia
In Slovakia, driving on a highway or expressway without a valid electronic vignette is a seriously sanctioned offense, even for a short trip. The country uses a fully automated control system: cameras scan license plates in real-time and cross-reference them with the e-vignette database. If no vignette is associated with your vehicle, you face a fixed fine.
For a private car, the amount can reach €150 to €500, depending on the payment deadline and the severity of the offense (recidivism, intentional fraud, etc.). Foreign drivers are not spared: Slovak authorities can send the fine abroad or proceed with immediate enforcement in case of a road check.
The absence of a vignette is noted even if you take a single exit or a free section followed by a toll section. It is therefore strongly recommended to purchase the vignette before entering any affected route to avoid any unpleasant surprises.
To avoid any inconvenience, purchase your vignette before using a highway.
Highways in Slovakia: a developing network subject to vignette
The Slovak highway network consists of several main highways (D) and expressways (R), totaling over 850 km in service. These routes connect the main cities of the country – such as Bratislava, Nitra, Žilina, Prešov, or Košice – and offer smooth connections to neighboring countries like Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, or Poland. The highways are well-maintained, modern, and often equipped with gas stations, rest areas, and surveillance cameras.
The entire Slovak highway network is subject to the electronic vignette, except for a few free urban sections. The absence of physical tolls allows for smoother traffic, but automatic checks are omnipresent. New projects are regularly launched to extend certain sections, improve national coverage, and promote cross-border exchanges.
THE MOTORWAY NETWORK IN SLOVAKIA
546 km
The Slovak network has about 546 km of highways (D) and 320 km of expressways (R). This represents a total of 866 km of toll roads. These routes are managed by the state company NDS (National Motorway Company of Slovakia), which ensures the maintenance and expansion of the network.
The specifics of the highway network in Slovakia
The Slovak highway network, although modern, has several specifics to know before hitting the road. First, all highways (D) and expressways (R) are subject to an electronic vignette, with no toll booths or barriers. Checks are fully automated by cameras that scan license plates, making the absence of a vignette easily detectable.
Another feature: the network is still under development. Some highways are not yet fully completed or connected, which may involve temporary sections or detours via national roads. It is therefore recommended to plan your route in advance, especially outside major routes.
Finally, Slovakia is one of the few countries to offer a vignette valid for 365 rolling days, allowing great flexibility for regular drivers or extended stays. Some urban sections, particularly around Bratislava, are exempt from the vignette to facilitate local traffic, but it is essential to identify these areas to avoid misunderstandings.
Can an electronic vignette be transferred in Slovakia?
No, the electronic vignette is neither transferable nor modifiable once purchased! It is automatically linked to the license plate entered at the time of ordering and remains valid only for that specific vehicle for its entire validity period.
This means you cannot:
- Transfer a vignette to another vehicle (even in case of sale, exchange, or temporary replacement)
- Correct a typo on the license plate after payment validation
- Change the validity period after purchase
What to do in case of an error?
If you entered an incorrect license plate or selected the wrong type of vignette, the vignette becomes invalid and you risk a fine in case of a check, even if payment has been made.
No modification or refund procedure is provided by the authorities, which is why it is essential to check all information before confirming your order.
